At Eastham where reins lash the cyclical tide
Steered back to the stable from the gate it can't jump
Locked and secured from the ditch by a door
The routine untamed crossed novel ambition unbridled
Looking back to the east and thinking of roots
Chronology wavers. Engraved back-to-front
In all that I read I saw only the background
But the yew at St. Mary's must have witnessed the truth
It could be said that I, in my time have seen much
More than the sum of you all, in a way, and yet
With the restriction that delimits and defines my sight
That stems from my form, to the earth adjoined
Forever fettered to the provisional, designed to the partial
I discern only fragments and so do we all
So from here my task is to collect the fragments
That befall me disordered and occasion by chance
To present as symbols in serendipitous patterns
That prescribe the odds of receiving
The meaning advanced

Aggregates collide to form this
How spectre defied curve

The elasticated walls
Exposed now are the distensions and omissions
The partial diagrams
The interest of the trusted onlooker
Wilfully blind to an understudy cast
Now we read the difficult lines
That diverged the more
For having come some close together
Here is a timely intervention to remind us
And turn us back
From the easy fallacy of a simple past
A green hue on black and white
